Research Highlights
Soil salinity is one of the major constraints affecting agricultural productivity worldwide. In this study, carbonaceous particles collected from candle flames were explored as a simple and low-cost seed priming agent to improve tomato seed germination under saline conditions.
The results demonstrated that soot-primed seeds exhibited:
- Higher germination percentage and seedling vigor
- Improved tolerance to NaCl-induced stress
- Reduced accumulation of sodium (Na⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions
- Lower oxidative damage
- More efficient carbohydrate mobilization during germination
These findings suggest that candle-soot particles can serve as an effective and inexpensive priming material, offering a promising strategy to enhance crop establishment in salt-affected agricultural environments.
