[概要]

東京農工大学は、農学と工学という異なる知の領域が交差する、非常にユニークな学びの場です。大学での学びの特徴は、知識を「受け取る」こと以上に、自ら考え、選び、決断する場面が多いことにあります。大学生活で積み重ねる一つひとつの選択と決断が、将来の可能性を形づくっていきます。

本講義では、そのような大学生活を考えるための視点として、「エントロピー（Entropy）」という概念を導入します。エントロピーとは物理学において、系が自然に無秩序へと向かう傾向を表す指標です。社会、環境、文化も同様に、意図的な働きかけがなければ、次第に秩序を失っていきます。つまり、現状を保つためにも、意識的な行動とエネルギーが必要なのです。

この視点から見ると、未来への向き合い方は大きく二つに分かれます。一つは、「どうせ崩れるのだから何をしても無駄だ」という悲観的な態度。もう一つは、「誰かが何とかしてくれるだろう」と行動を他者に委ねてしまう受け身の態度です。しかし、どちらの態度も、変化の中で主体性を失いやすくなります。未来が確定していないからこそ、皆さん一人ひとりの選択と行動には意味があります。

現在は、生成AIが大量の情報やコンテンツを生み出す時代です。情報があふれる一方で、文脈や意図を欠いたまま受け取れば、それは単なる「ノイズ」になりかねません。しかし、私たち人間がそれらを批判的に読み解き、目的をもって選び、意味づけることで、新しい価値や秩序を生み出すことができます。技術が進化するほど、人間には倫理的な判断力と創造的な関与が強く求められます。

本講義では、「Time is Life（時間は命）」という視点を軸に、大学における時間の使い方、選択と決断の重要性、そして多様な経験が将来のレジリエンスにつながる理由を、具体例とともに考えていきます。このキャンパスでの経験が、皆さん自身のフロンティアを広げ、未来を形づくる力となることを願っています。

[Overview]

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology is a uniquely interdisciplinary learning environment, where the distinct domains of agriculture and engineering intersect. What sets university education apart is not simply the reception of knowledge, but the many moments that call for independent thinking, deliberate choice, and decisive action. Each decision you make throughout your university life gradually shapes the possibilities that lie ahead.

In this course, we introduce the concept of entropy as a lens through which to reflect on university life. In physics, entropy describes the natural tendency of systems to move toward disorder. The same principle applies to society, the environment, and culture — without intentional effort, order gradually breaks down. Even maintaining the status quo requires conscious action and energy.

Seen through this lens, there are two common ways of facing the future. One is pessimism: “Things will fall apart anyway, so nothing I do matters.” The other is passive optimism: “Someone else will figure it out.” Both attitudes, however, tend to erode agency in the face of change. Precisely because the future is not predetermined, the choices and actions of each one of you carry real weight.

We live in an era when generative AI produces vast quantities of information and content. When received without context or intention, that information risks becoming nothing more than noise. Yet when we — as human beings — read it critically, select purposefully, and construct meaning from it, we become capable of generating new value and order. The more technology advances, the more urgently it calls for ethical judgment and creative engagement from us.

This course takes “Time is Life” as its guiding perspective, exploring through concrete examples how we use time at university, why choices and decisions matter, and how diverse experiences build the resilience we will need in the future. It is my hope that your time on this campus will broaden your own frontier and become a force that shapes the future you will create.
