レンゴロ教授 × ハマカーン浜谷氏の会話：Conversation between Prof. Wuled Lenggoro and Kenji Hamatani (TUAT Ambassador)

浜谷氏 Hamatani:
「先生、なんでこの研究室からは、こんなにポンポン『世界初』が出てくるんですか？」”Professor, how does your lab keep producing so many ‘world-first’ discoveries?”

教授：Prof. Lenggoro:
「研究成果というのは、やはり『人材』なんです。卒業していく学生さんこそが一番の成果であって、研究結果（世界初の発見）というのは、実はそのプロセスで得られる『副産物』に過ぎないと考えています。」“To me, the real outcome of research is people. The students who graduate from this lab are the most important achievement. Research results—even a world-first discovery—are really just by-products of the process.”

浜谷氏：Hamatani:
「（驚いて）研究結果は副産物……！ 1番の宝は学生さんということですね。でも、そんなに簡単に世界初なんて出ないでしょう？」“Wow… so you’re saying the discoveries are just by-products? That means your greatest treasure is your students. But surely world-first discoveries don’t come that easily?”

教授：Prof. Lenggoro:
「10個研究があっても、9割は途中で時間切れになったり、うまくいかなかったりします。でも、学生さんはその『うまくいかないプロセス』からこそ、多くのことを学ぶんです。私は場所と、ある種の『ぐちゃぐちゃ感（自由な環境）』を提供して、あとは学生さんが動き出すのを待つ。私の方が学生についていっている感覚ですね。」“Even if we have ten research projects, about ninety percent never reach the finish line. Some simply run out of time; others don’t work as expected. But those are exactly the experiences from which students learn the most. My role is to provide the place—and a certain amount of creative ‘messiness,’ a free environment where ideas can emerge. Then I wait for the students to start moving on their own. Sometimes it feels less like they’re following me and more like I’m following them.”

浜谷氏：Hamatani:
「先生が種をまいて、学生というトマトが芽吹くのを待つ。失敗は俺が取るから、主役は君たちだという……。いやあ、かっこいい。上司にしたいタイプですね！」“So you’re the one planting the seeds and waiting for the tomatoes—your students—to grow. You’re saying, ‘I’ll take responsibility for the failures, so you be the ones in the spotlight.’ That’s really impressive. You’re exactly the kind of boss people would want to work for.”
