2025年10月、東京農工大学(TUAT)の教員と学生約45名が、インドネシアのガジャマダ大学(UGM)森林学部を訪問しました。今回の訪問の目的は、単なる国際交流ではありません。
学生が実社会の課題に対して、多様な文化的・専門的背景を持つ学生とともに考え、議論し、自らの意見を形成する機会をつくることにあります。
「正解」ではなく「問い」を学ぶ
UGMの学生とTUATの学生は混成グループを構成し、
- パーム油とエネルギー
- 森林保全と国立公園
- 食料安全保障
- EVサプライチェーン
- バイオマスエネルギー
- 廃食油の循環利用
などのテーマについて議論しました。
これらの課題には明確な正解がありません。
しかし、だからこそ学生は、
- 自分と異なる価値観に触れる
- 異なる立場から課題を見る
- 自分自身の前提を問い直す
経験を得ることができます。
なぜ海外なのか
同じテーマでも、日本だけで議論すると、参加者は似た教育背景や社会経験を共有しています。
一方で、インドネシアでは、
- エネルギー問題
- 森林開発
- 食料生産
- 資源利用
が日常生活や地域経済と強く結びついています。
現地の学生との対話によって、
学生たちは教室だけでは得られない現実に触れます。
「研究のための教育」ではなく「教育のための研究」
私たちが学生を海外へ連れて行く理由は、
学生自身が自ら考え、意思決定し、異なる価値観と向き合う経験を得ること
です。
研究テーマは将来変わるかもしれません。
しかし、未知の問題に対して考え続ける力は、一生残ります。
未来のための投資
大学教育において最も重要な成果は、論文や特許ではありません。
それは、
社会の中で考え、行動し、新たな価値を生み出す人材を育てること
です。
今回のUGMとの共同学習は、そのための小さな一歩です。
私たちは今後も、大学の枠を超え、学生が世界と直接対話できる機会を大切にしていきたいと考えています。
Collaboration between Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) and the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University: Strengthening Academic Synergy and Case-Based Learning

Yogyakarta, October 30, 2025 — The Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), welcomed a visit from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), Japan, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the UGM Faculty of Forestry Auditorium. This activity is part of an effort to strengthen academic cooperation and expand international networks between the two universities, particularly in the fields of forestry, the environment, and sustainable energy.

The event started at 10:00 a.m. WIB, beginning with a welcome speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry UGM, Ir. Sigit Sunarta, S.Hut., MP, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU. In his speech, he expressed his appreciation for TUAT’s visit to the Faculty of Forestry UGM. After the speech, the event continued with an introduction to the faculty profile, educational programs, and various flagship programs of the faculty by the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Ir. Dwiko Budi Permadi, S.Hut., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU.

The next remarks were delivered by Prof. Sachiho W. Arai, Ph.D., from TUAT. He expressed his pleasure at visiting and interacting directly with the academic community of the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

Also present in the TUAT group were Associate Professor Mihoko Mori, Prof. Dr. Koji Nakano, Prof. Dr. Eng. Hiroyuki Sasahara, and Prof. Wuled Lenggoro, as well as 45 TUAT students. The event was also attended by students from the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University, who actively participated in all series of activities.

Following the welcome session, the event continued with a “Student Grouping and Case-Based Learning Introduction” led by professors from TUAT. In this activity, students from TUAT and the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University, were divided into several groups to discuss various strategic issues related to natural resources, energy, and sustainable development.

The topics discussed in this case-based learning activity include:
- Oil Palm & Energy (Biomass & Biofuels) — discusses the potential and challenges of developing palm oil-based renewable energy.
- National Parks & Conservation — focuses on ecological management and preservation of conservation areas.
- Food Estate & Agricultural Security — highlights large-scale agricultural policies and practices for food security.
- EV Supply Chain (Nickel & Coal) — discusses the role of strategic minerals in the electric vehicle industry.
- Renewable Energy & Methanol from Biomass — highlights future biomass-based energy opportunities.
- Used Cooking Oil Circular Economy (Export Focus) — a case study on managing waste cooking oil into energy and international trade opportunities.


During this session, students from both universities engaged in active discussions, exchanged perspectives, and presented their ideas in group presentations to lecturers from TUAT and UGM. The event was dynamic and interactive, reflecting a collaborative spirit and openness to sharing knowledge across cultures and disciplines.


The event concluded with an exchange of souvenirs as a symbol of friendship and commitment to strengthening academic cooperation in the future.

The Faculty of Forestry UGM hopes that this visit will be an important milestone in expanding international cooperation, not only in the fields of research and education, but also in developing innovative solutions to address global challenges in the forestry and environmental sectors.
