Dr. Masahiro Yorizane, the revered sixth president of Hiroshima University, passed away in April 2024 at the age of 104. For me, an Indonesian alumnus, the news was profoundly personal. I had the honor of speaking with him between 2008 and 2010 at alumni gatherings in Tokyo (the photo below), forming an impression of a kind, visionary elder. It was only later, when I read his article (Yorizane, 2001), that I understood the resilient leader beneath—the “silent architect” of my destiny.
Dr. Yorizane’s tenure (1981~1985) was defined by executing the campus relocation from Hiroshima City to the Higashi-Hiroshima area (now a city), an overhaul born from turmoil. He personally recalled advancing through barricades to reclaim the university. Beyond this, his mind was already focused on his “too-early” plan to establish a Hiroshima University branch in Indonesia—a level of bold, international foresight that I find unparalleled today.
As a government scholar, I was admitted without an entrance exam (Hiroshima University, April 1989). Separately, I had already proven my readiness for the academic challenge by passing the highest Japanese proficiency level (currently, N1) the previous December. My assignment to Hiroshima University’s Chemical Engineering Department was decided by the Ministry, but I believe a professor, an alumnus of Dr. Yorizane’s lab, was key to my acceptance.
That single decision, born from Dr. Yorizane’s influence, defined my 17-year journey with Hiroshima University—first as a student (1989-1993), then as a research associate, 1998-2006). During my faculty years at HU, I co-supervised Indonesian fellows with senior Japanese professors, many of whom are now full professors at key universities (ITB, ITS, UnPad, etc.) in Indonesia. In 2007, I moved to Tokyo, where I became a faculty member at a national university (Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology). It was during this period that I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Yorizane at HU alumni gatherings (2008-2010). Here in Tokyo, I have continued his legacy by supervising more than 20 PhD students from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan. Among the graduates, more than five of them are now faculty members (academic staffs) at key universities in their home countries, further strengthening the international academic network he envisioned.
Reflecting on those conversations in Tokyo, I now see the man I met in a new light: a gentle visionary with an iron will. His legacy lies not only in the university buildings of the Higashi-Hiroshima Basin but in the personal fates of “student” like me, whose paths were guided by his enduring passion. 広島大学の第6代学長、頼實正弘先生が2024年4月、104歳でご逝去されました。インドネシア出身の卒業生である私にとって、その訃報は深く個人的なものでした。2008年から2010年にかけて、東京での同窓会（上の写真）で先生とお話しする栄誉に恵まれ、優しく先見の明のある長老という印象を抱いておりました。後に先生の記事（2001年）を拝読して初めて、その温厚な外見の下にある不屈のリーダーシップを理解し、先生が私の運命を静かに設計してくださった建築家であったことを知りました。
頼實先生の学長在任期間（昭和56(1981)年～1985年）は、混乱から生まれた大学改革である広島市から東広島地区（現在は東広島市）への キャンパス移転の実行によって特徴づけられます。先生は個人的に、大学を取り戻すためにバリケードを突破して前進したことを回想されていました。それにとどまらず、先生の頭の中には既に、インドネシアに広島大学の分校を設立するという「時期尚早」な計画がありました。このような大胆で国際的な先見性は、今日でも比類のないものだと思います。
先生の構想には推進者が必要でした。そして、ここで先生の遺産が私の運命となったのです。政府奨学生として、私には国、大学、専攻を選ぶ選択肢はありませんでした。それは受け入れなければならない運命でした。その運命は突然やってきました。1989年1月か2月、私が東京の日本語学校で学んでいた時、広島大学への配属が決まり、その年の4月から始まることになったのです。
政府奨学生として、私は入学試験なしで入学を許可されました。それとは別に、前年12月に日本語能力試験の最高レベル（現、N1）に合格することで、学術的な挑戦への準備ができていることを既に証明していました。私の広島大学（化学工学科）への配属は文部省の決定でしたが、受け入れの際には頼實研究室出身の教授が鍵となったと推測しています。
頼實先生の影響から生まれたその一つの決断が、私の工学士の学位取得から広島大学教員生活に至るまでの17年間の道のりを決定づけたのです。それは私が受け継いだ遺産でもあり、私も10人以上のインドネシア人学生を指導し、彼らは今や教授（バンドン工科大学ITBやセプル・ノペンバー工科大学ITSなど）となり、先生が築いたネットワークを強化しています。
頼實先生の影響から生まれたその一つの決定が、広島大学での私の17年間の歩み—学生として（1989-1998年）、そして教員として（1998-2006年）勤務した期間—を決定づけました。広島大学での教員時代、私は日本人の教授と共にインドネシアからの留学生を共同指導し、彼らの多くは現在、インドネシアの主要大学（バンドン工科大学ITBやITSなど）で教授となっています。2007年に東京に移り、私は東京農工大学の教員となりました。この時期に、広島大学同窓会（2008-2010年）で頼實先生にお会いする特権を得たのです。ここ東京農工大学の研究室では、インドネシア、マレーシア、日本から20名以上の博士課程学生を指導することで、頼實先生の遺産を継続しています。博士号取得者のうち、5名以上は現在、母国と日本の主要大学で教員となっており、頼實先生が構想した国際的な学術ネットワークをさらに強化しています。
東京でのあの頃の会話を振り返ると、お会いした方を新たな光の下で見ることができます。それは、鉄の意志を持った優しい先見者でした。頼實先生の遺産は、東広島盆地の大学建物だけでなく、先生の永続する情熱によって道筋を示された私のような卒業生の個人的な運命の中にも存在しているのです。
