Starting the Lab

This research group (Lenggoro Lab) was started in January 2007, as one of 22 research groups (led by Associate Professor) at the Strategic Division of Young Researchers, Institute of Symbiotic Science and Technology. Those 22 fellows were the 1st generation of Japan’s tenure-track program (2006-2011), funded by the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology coordinated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

In April 2007, four students (bachelor, master, doctor) were started their course with Lenggoro as thesis advisor, and now (2013) around 14-15 students are within the group.

Wuled Lenggoro was a tenured assistant professor (1998-2006) at Hiroshima University, and a tenure-track associate professor at TUAT (2007-2009, then tenured in 2009)

本拠点は、平成18年度文部科学省科学技術振興調整費「若手研究者の自立的研究環境整備促進」事業の採択を受けて設置され、テニュア・トラック制(若手研究者が、任期付きの雇用形態で自立した研究者としての経験を積み、厳格な審査を経て安定的な職を得る仕組み)を導入することで、若手研究者に自立と活躍の機会を与えています。
 国際公募により採用した若手研究者22名は、特任准教授(テニュア・トラック教員)として本拠点に所属しており、「自主財源を含めた研究費と研究スペースの優先配分」「管理運営業務などの負荷軽減」「事務的支援を行う若手研究支援室の設置」などの優遇措置を受け、自立した環境の中で集中的研究を行い、研究能力の確立や維持拡大を図っています。

What is the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology

Special coordination funds for promoting science and technology were originally top-down funds competitively distributed by the Council for Science and Technology Policy to solve important issues concerning Japan’s science and technology policy. The funds were first appropriated in fiscal 1981 for the budget of the then Science and Technology Agency. The funds were used in line with the policy of the predecessor of the Council for Science and Technology Policy.

When the Science and Technology Agency was reorganized into the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2001, the use of the special coordination funds was reviewed. The funds are now used to finance the reform of the nation’s science and technology systems and strategic investments into science fields that have potential for growth.

Special coordination funds for promoting science and technology are utilized as competitively distributed policy-oriented funds. The funds’ use is decided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology according to the course of action adopted by the Council for Science and Technology Policy. Such funds were budgeted for fiscal 2006 based on the council’s proposal for the nation’s basic science and technology policy and basic idea on the distribution of the funds, both of which were given on December 27, 2005.

The funds being allotted for fiscal 2006 are meant to:
1) strengthen the executive function of the Council for Science and Technology Policy,
2) promote the reform of the nation’s science and technology systems in order to increase the creativity of human resources and help them create innovative ideas,
3) promote strategic research and development while meeting the people’s needs, and
4) promote efforts to strategically internationalize science and technology activities in Japan.

Programs being financed by the special coordination funds include those undertaken by heads of research organizations. The characteristics of the programs are very unique, with research activities being carried out under special themes or topics set for each fiscal year. The size of the annual budget of some programs may surpass some JPY 1 billion. Allotted funds are not used solely for the research of the allottee’s choosing because they are entrusted by the Council for Science and Technology Policy to conduct research under certain themes or fields.
