Development of low-cost and user-friendly sustainable portable particulate sensor (M. A. Fathihah, M. P. Khairunnisa, M. Rashid, J. NorRuwaida, M. Dewika, Y. Ito, I. W. Lenggoro)

With a research group at Univ. Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia Japan International Institute of Technology) we co-designed a sensor for aerosols (PM) and the results was presented at International Conference on Process Engineering and Advanced Materials (ICPEAM2018) 13–14 August 2018, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A newly developed on-line PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 μm) measurement using Arduino as the microcontroller which has multi-connections was able to provide real-time measurement. A dust sensor (Shinyei) is used to measure the concentration of the particulate matter at ambient air along with temperature and humidity sensor. The device was tested for five days to determine the particulate concentration indoor and outdoor at one site in Malaysia. The results showed that the average of the particulate concentration at the indoor and outdoor for five days were 329 and 1587 μg/m3 respectively.

Arduino….is an open-source hardware and software company, project and user community that designs and manufactures single-board microcontrollers and microcontroller kits for building digital devices and interactive objects that can sense and control objects in the physical and digital world.
